Japan Events in December 2026: What's On, Where, and Whether It's Free

December 2026 runs on two currents at once. Pop culture peaks with Tokyo Comic Con (Dec 11–13) and Jump Festa (Dec 19–20); tradition answers with the Chichibu Night Festival (Dec 2–3) — kilometre-long floats and winter fireworks — and Nara's 800-year-old Kasuga Wakamiya On-Matsuri (Dec 15–18). The whole month glows with illuminations, and it ends at midnight on Dec 31 with Joya-no-Kane temple bells and the first hatsumode shrine visits of 2027.

The honest short-list — which one is for you?

PickBest forThe trade-off
Chichibu Night FestivalOne of Japan's three great float festivals — and the rare chance to watch fireworks in crisp winter air.Dec 3 draws enormous crowds 90 min from Tokyo; going home is the slow part. Dress for near-zero.
Tokyo Comic ConHollywood guests, props and Japan's cosplay scene in one hall.Buy dated e-tickets ahead; photo/autograph sessions sell separately and early.
Jump FestaThe anime/manga event of the year — stage shows and next-year reveals, free.Free ≠ easy: entry works on advance systems and the halls hit capacity fast.
New Year's Eve, done Japanese-style108 bell tolls at Chion-in, then first prayers at Meiji Jingu — trains run all night in Tokyo. It's a queueing sport: cold, slow-moving crowds well past 2 a.m.

For most first-timers: the Chichibu Night Festival (Dec 2–3) — nothing else combines UNESCO-listed floats, winter fireworks and a Tokyo day-trip radius.

Illuminations, everywhere

December is the illumination summit: Roppongi and Marunouchi in Tokyo, Midosuji in Osaka, Nabana no Sato's million-bulb park near Nagoya, and — from Dec 26 — Zao's floodlit snow monsters. Routes, dates and free-vs-paid: winter illuminations 2026–2027 guide.

The year-end pivot

Two calendars collide in the final week: Christmas markets pour their last glühwein around Dec 25, and Japan switches to shogatsu mode — Joya-no-Kane purges the year's 108 desires at midnight, and millions begin hatsumode at Fushimi Inari, Sumiyoshi Taisha and Meiji Jingu. Tokyo's trains run through the night of Dec 31 — the one night of the year they do.

Planning tips for December

  • Book the conventions like flights. Comic Con and Jump Festa tickets/entry slots are dated and capacity-controlled — sort them before your hotel.
  • Dec 29 – Jan 3 is shutdown week. Many restaurants, museums and shops close for the New Year — plan those days around shrines, parks and department-store food halls.
  • Illuminations cost nothing; dinner nearby does. Free displays + Christmas-dinner demand = book restaurants near Marunouchi/Midosuji early.
  • Winter fireworks are cold fireworks. Chichibu on Dec 3 sits near 0 °C after dark — gloves, thermals, and a spot upwind of the smoke.
