Shirakawa-go's 2027 light-up runs Jan 11, 17, 24 & 31 — booking isn't open yet.

The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association confirmed the 41st annual winter illumination on July 1, 2026: four nights, each 17:30–19:30, in the Ogimachi district of Shirakawa Village, Gifu. As of July 17, 2026, the actual reservation window for 2027 hasn't opened — here's exactly what's confirmed, what to expect, and how the booking system has worked in recent seasons.

The confirmed 2027 dates

  • Monday, January 11, 2027 (national holiday)
  • Sunday, January 17, 2027
  • Sunday, January 24, 2027
  • Sunday, January 31, 2027

Illumination runs 17:30–19:30 each night. This is one edition on from the 40th light-up, held on the equivalent four dates in January–February 2026 (Jan 12, 18, 25 and Feb 1), which has already concluded.

It's reservation-only — there's no walking in

Every recent season, including the one that just finished, has run as a strict reservation system: without a booking you cannot enter the village for the evening light-up, even if you show up that night. You can still visit Shirakawa-go itself during the day on a light-up date with no reservation — access is simply cut off in the afternoon, and everyone without a light-up booking has to leave before the 17:30 start. If all you want is the gassho-zukuri village by daylight, no reservation is needed at all; it's specifically the evening light-up sessions that are locked to advance bookings.

How the reservation system works (based on the 2026 season)

The tourist association hasn't published 2027's booking details yet — its site says they'll post "in early September" 2026 — but the last several winters have all followed the same pattern, across three or four channels:

  1. Book a night in the village itself. Reserve one of the gassho-zukuri farmhouse inns for a light-up date and you're inside for the evening automatically, no separate ticket needed. These lodging-linked slots have run as a lottery, applications opening around October 1 and closing at month's end, with results announced roughly two weeks later. Rooms are extremely limited.
  2. A reserved light-up shuttle bus. Regular scheduled buses from Takayama, Kanazawa or Toyama stop running before the evening session starts, so bus access on the night itself means one of the dedicated shuttles that regional operators run only on the four illumination dates — Nohi Bus (from Takayama) and Kaetsunou Bus (from Toyama) among them. Nohi Bus's own page for this season is currently marked "in preparation," with full details due September 22, 2026 at 14:00 — a concrete example of how tight to the season these pages usually update.
  3. A one-day guided tour. Travel agencies (Club Tourism, Willer Express and others) sell round-trip day tours from Nagoya, Kanazawa, Tokyo and elsewhere that bundle transport with a reserved viewing slot, and sometimes dinner. These have opened for booking in the September–October window in past seasons — the highest-cost, lowest-effort option.
  4. A day-trip parking permit, for visitors driving themselves, has also run in past seasons — a first-come (not lottery) booking that has opened in early September. A parking reservation alone gets your car into the village; it hasn't always included a spot at the viewing platform, which in some seasons needed its own ticket bundled with lodging or a tour.

What to actually do right now (as of July 17, 2026)

Nothing is bookable yet, so there's nothing to buy today. The two concrete dates worth calendar-ing: the tourist association's site (shirakawa-go.gr.jp) says full 2027 reservation details post in early September 2026, and Nohi Bus's shuttle page is dated to update on September 22, 2026, 14:00. Recent seasons' lodging lottery and shuttle/tour slots have consistently filled within the season once bookings opened, so plan to check both sites as soon as September starts.

FAQ

When is the Shirakawa-go winter illumination in 2027? Four nights: Monday, January 11 (a national holiday), and Sundays January 17, 24 and 31, 2027, each 17:30–19:30. Confirmed by the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association on July 1, 2026.

Do I need a reservation to see the Shirakawa-go light-up? Yes. Recent seasons have all run as reservation-only — you can't attend the evening session without booking, whether through an overnight village stay, a reserved shuttle or tour bus, or a day-trip parking permit.

When does booking open for the 2027 light-up? It hasn't yet, as of July 17, 2026. The tourist association says full details post in early September 2026; Nohi Bus's own shuttle-booking page is scheduled to update September 22, 2026 at 14:00.

Can I visit Shirakawa-go without going to the light-up? Yes — the village itself needs no reservation during the day. Only the evening light-up sessions on the four specific dates are reservation-only.
