The year-end pivot
Two calendars collide in the final week: Christmas markets pour their last glühwein around Dec 25, and Japan switches to shogatsu mode — Joya-no-Kane purges the year's 108 desires at midnight, and millions begin hatsumode at Fushimi Inari, Sumiyoshi Taisha and Meiji Jingu. Tokyo's trains run through the night of Dec 31 — the one night of the year they do.

- Book the conventions like flights. Comic Con and Jump Festa tickets/entry slots are dated and capacity-controlled — sort them before your hotel.
- Dec 29 – Jan 3 is shutdown week. Many restaurants, museums and shops close for the New Year — plan those days around shrines, parks and department-store food halls.
- Illuminations cost nothing; dinner nearby does. Free displays + Christmas-dinner demand = book restaurants near Marunouchi/Midosuji early.
- Winter fireworks are cold fireworks. Chichibu on Dec 3 sits near 0 °C after dark — gloves, thermals, and a spot upwind of the smoke.
