Japan Events in October 2026: What's On, Where, and Whether It's Free

October 2026 is the month Japan shows off. The weather is the year's best, and the calendar is wall-to-wall: Nagasaki Kunchi (Oct 7–9), the Takayama Autumn Festival (Oct 9–10), Kawagoe's float festival (Oct 17–18) half an hour from Tokyo, and Kyoto's astonishing double-header on Oct 22 — the Jidai Matsuri procession by day and the Kurama Fire Festival by night. Balloons close the month at the Saga International Balloon Fiesta (from Oct 30).

The honest short-list — which one is for you?
| Pick | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Kyoto's Oct 22 double | The single richest festival day in Japan: 2,000-person historical procession by day, flaming torches in a mountain village by night. | Kurama's tiny valley packs solid; trains back are slow and jammed — treat it as a late night. |
| Takayama Autumn | Ornate karakuri-puppet floats in a preserved old town — Japan's most beautiful small-city festival. | Lodging in Takayama sells out far ahead; consider staying in Furukawa or Gero. |
| Kawagoe Matsuri | Full-scale float battles (hikkawase) 30 minutes from central Tokyo. | It draws hundreds of thousands — arrive before noon, and expect slow trains home. |
| Saga Balloon Fiesta | Dawn mass-launches of dozens of balloons over the Kase River. | The magic is at 7 a.m. — you'll need an early start and a Kyushu detour. |
For most first-timers: Kawagoe (Oct 17–18) — a genuine great festival with a Tokyo-day-trip price of admission. If you're in Kansai on Oct 22, do the Kyoto double.
Kyushu's kunchi season
October is kunchi (autumn thanksgiving) season across the southwest: Nagasaki Kunchi (Oct 7–9) with its Chinese-influenced dragon dances, Hakata Okunchi (Oct 23–24) in Fukuoka, and Okinawa's Naha Great Tug-of-War (Oct 11), where visitors grab the 200-metre rope alongside locals. Pair any of them with the Saga balloons for a perfect Kyushu week — more regional context in the beyond-Tokyo matsuri guide.
Culture indoors: film and food
The Tokyo International Film Festival (from Oct 26) takes over Hibiya and Ginza with premieres and retrospectives, and Halloween crowds converge on the parks and Shibuya on Oct 31 — while foliage hunters should already be planning November with our autumn leaves guide.
Planning tips for October
- This is peak "perfect weather" demand. October hotels in Kyoto and Takayama book out furthest ahead of any autumn month — reserve as soon as dates fix.
- Oct 22 needs a plan. Jidai Matsuri ends late afternoon; Kurama's fires peak from 20:00. Take the Eizan line up early evening, expect standing room, and don't schedule an early Oct 23.
- Dawn events mean dawn. Saga's mass launches and Nagasaki Kunchi's morning performances start early; night owls should target Kurama and Kawagoe's lantern-lit evenings instead.
- Sports Day weekend (Oct 10–12) adds domestic travellers to Takayama and Naha — book those two first.

FAQ
What are the biggest events in Japan in October 2026? Nagasaki Kunchi (Oct 7–9), the Takayama Autumn Festival (Oct 9–10), Kawagoe Matsuri (Oct 17–18), Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri and Kurama Fire Festival (both Oct 22), and the Saga Balloon Fiesta (from Oct 30).
Is October a good time to visit Japan? It's arguably the best month: mild, mostly dry, festival-dense, with early foliage in the mountains. It's also peak demand — book early.
Can you see the Jidai Matsuri and Kurama Fire Festival on the same day? Yes — both fall on Oct 22, 2026 in Kyoto. Watch the procession by day, then take the Eizan railway to Kurama for the evening fires; expect crowds and a late return.
Are Japan's October festivals free? Almost all of them — Kunchi, Takayama, Kawagoe, Jidai, Kurama and the balloon fiesta are free to watch, with optional paid seats at some.
What should I book ahead for October 2026? Kyoto and Takayama accommodation first, then any paid festival seating (Jidai Matsuri stands) and TIFF screenings once schedules are out.
