Kyushu's kunchi season
October is kunchi (autumn thanksgiving) season across the southwest: Nagasaki Kunchi (Oct 7–9) with its Chinese-influenced dragon dances, Hakata Okunchi (Oct 23–24) in Fukuoka, and Okinawa's Naha Great Tug-of-War (Oct 11), where visitors grab the 200-metre rope alongside locals. - This is peak "perfect weather" demand. October hotels in Kyoto and Takayama book out furthest ahead of any autumn month — reserve as soon as dates fix.
- Oct 22 needs a plan. Jidai Matsuri ends late afternoon; Kurama's fires peak from 20:00. Take the Eizan line up early evening, expect standing room, and don't schedule an early Oct 23.
- Dawn events mean dawn. Saga's mass launches and Nagasaki Kunchi's morning performances start early; night owls should target Kurama and Kawagoe's lantern-lit evenings instead.
- Sports Day weekend (Oct 10–12) adds domestic travellers to Takayama and Naha — book those two first.
