Matsue Suitoro lights the streets and canals around Matsue Castle with lanterns on nine evenings between September 26 and October 18, 2026 (weekends and holidays only, 18:00-21:00). Organised by the Matsue Lighting Caravan, it turns Japan's "City of Water" into a candlelit walking route through one of the country's twelve original castles -- and one of only five to hold National Treasure status.
Unlike the crowds that pack Kyoto's autumn illuminations, Suitoro is a quieter, local affair: candles and paper lanterns line the old canal-side streets around the castle moat, and the tower itself is lit after dark for the walk. It's designed as an evening stroll rather than a single ticketed spectacle -- most visitors wander at their own pace between the castle grounds and the surrounding Horikawa canal district.
The event runs only on its specific nine dates, not nightly through the full run, so it's worth checking the calendar before a weekday visit.
