Background & story
The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is Asia's premier sky-sports event, held each autumn on the wide banks of the Kase River in Saga City, Kyushu. Over five days it hosts an international hot-air balloon competition with 100+ balloons, alongside night-glow shows and family attractions. It has grown into one of Japan's most spectacular seasonal gatherings, drawing over 800,000 visitors.
The Saga International Balloon Fiesta 2026 takes place over five days, Friday, October 30 to Tuesday, November 3, 2026, on the Kase River banks in Saga City, Kyushu. Entry is free. Competition flights are scheduled every day from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. (the final day has a morning session only), and the La Montgolfier Nocturne night glow runs on November 2 and 3 from 6:30 p.m. For the fiesta only, JR opens a temporary station, Balloon Saga Station, at the venue. - Competition flights — the 39th Pacific Cup (including Round 3 of the 2026 Honda Grand Prix) and the Fiesta category. Whether a session is a mass launch from the field or a fly-in to targets inside the venue is decided at the briefing just before the flight.
- Balloon Fantasia — animal- and character-shaped balloons inflated on the field.
- Key Grab Race — the final-day afternoon event, where pilots steer their balloons to grab a giant "key" hung from a pole.
- La Montgolfier Nocturne (night glow) — balloons lined up on the riverbed light up as burners fire in time with music. In rain or strong wind it may be cancelled or held as a burner-only show.
Getting there
By train (JR) — the reliable option
- During the fiesta only (Oct 30–Nov 3), JR runs a temporary stop, Balloon Saga Station, on the Nagasaki Main Line between Nabeshima and Kubota, opening straight onto the venue. The organiser lists the fare from Saga Station as ¥240 (adult) / ¥120 (child). IC cards such as SUGOCA are accepted.
- From Hakata, special limited expresses run with no change (JR Kyushu announcement):

- JR Kyushu's Balloon Saga Net Ticket (sold only through its online train reservation service) costs ¥1,540 one way for adults between Hakata and Balloon Saga. JR Kyushu warns that the 6:00 a.m. Relay Kamome No. 1 from Hakata is very crowded and needs a change at Saga.
- Balloon Saga Station is not open on the Oct 28–29 practice days.
By car
- The venue's North car park on the riverbed costs ¥2,000 per car. Temporary car parks around the venue are free; depending on the car park, you continue on foot, by JR (from Saga, Kubota or Kanzaki stations, for example) or by shuttle bus (¥250 adult / ¥130 child one way). Open days vary by car park, so check the official parking guide (https://www.sibf.jp/parking/).
- Shuttle buses from the temporary car parks run on Oct 31, Nov 1 and Nov 3 only — none on the weekdays Oct 30 and Nov 2. For the separate shuttle linking central Saga with the venue, see the official shuttle page (https://www.sibf.jp/access/shuttle.html).
- From 2026 the former auto-camp area is a car-camping car park (about 100 spaces on the north and south sides of the venue), booked through the Ticket Pass site. The lottery (Oct 1–12) has closed; winners are emailed from Oct 14. Only for sections that did not fill, a first-come second round runs from 12:00 on Oct 16 to 23:59 on Oct 26 (sections sold out in the lottery are not offered again). Bookings cover the nights of Oct 29 to Nov 2.
- Some roads around the venue are closed to general traffic during competitions. On weekends and the holiday the car parks and roads get very busy, so JR is recommended.
Tips for the day
- Go for the morning — flights start at 7:00 a.m. The official Q&A says calm morning sessions fly more often, while afternoon sessions are often cancelled as the wind picks up.
- Flying is decided at the last minute — whether and how balloons fly is set at the pre-flight briefing and announced at the venue, on the official site and on X (@SIBFO). Even the organiser cannot say in advance which day will have a mass launch.
- For the night glow, choose Nov 2 or 3 — those are the only two evenings.

To catch the 7:00 a.m. flights, stay in Saga the night before or take one of the early special limited expresses — Kasasagi No. 91, 93 and 95 run from Hakata to Balloon Saga Station with no change. On weekends and the Nov 3 holiday the riverside car parks and surrounding roads get very congested, so both the organiser and Saga's tourism board recommend coming by JR. Whether balloons fly — and whether it is a mass launch from the field or a fly-in from outside — is decided at the briefing just before each session and announced at the venue, on the official site and on X (@SIBFO).
