Japan Events in September 2026: What's On, Where, and Whether It's Free

September 2026 is when Japan's event calendar pivots from heat to harvest. The anchors: the Aki Basho grand sumo tournament (Sep 13–27) at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo Game Show (from Sep 19) at Makuhari Messe, Ultra Japan (Sep 19–20), Osaka's death-defying Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri (Sep 19–20), and — at the other emotional extreme — Toyama's lantern-lit Owara Kaze no Bon (Sep 1–3). Disney Halloween opens Sep 16 and runs to Oct 31.

The honest short-list — which one is for you?
| Pick | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Aki Basho | The easiest world-class Japanese spectacle to actually attend — 15 straight days in central Tokyo. | Weekend and final-day tickets sell out when sales open (~5 weeks ahead); aim for a weekday. |
| Tokyo Game Show | Hands-on with unreleased games, hardware and cosplay culture. | Buy e-tickets in advance; weekend halls are shoulder-to-shoulder — go on a weekday if you can. |
| Owara Kaze no Bon | The most atmospheric festival of early autumn — silent, lantern-lit dancing in a hillside town. | Yatsuo is small: lodging is scarce, so day-trip from Toyama city and expect late trains back. |
| Kishiwada Danjiri | Four-ton wooden floats taken around corners at a sprint — pure adrenaline. | It's genuinely crowded and fast-moving; hold kerb positions early and mind the carts. |
For most first-timers: the Aki Basho. It's the year's last Tokyo sumo tournament, and mid-week tickets are the most gettable of the big-three Tokyo basho.
Sumo, screens and street carts
September's contrast is the point. Book sumo via the official channels the week sales open — our Aki Basho guide has the seat-type walkthrough. Tokyo Game Show at Makuhari and Ultra Japan in Odaiba make the same weekend (Sep 19–20) Japan's loudest; Osaka counters with Kishiwada's danjiri cart-racing. If you want September's soul rather than its volume, it's in Owara Kaze no Bon (Sep 1–3).
Season notes: Halloween starts, autumn food begins
Disney Halloween (Sep 16 – Oct 31) opens the costume season, and food festivals return with cooler air: free grilled sanma at Meguro's Sanma Festival (Sep 6), German beers at Oktoberfest in Shiba Park (from Sep 11), and the embassy-festival season closes its summer run with Namaste India (Sep 26–27) — more of those in our international festivals guide.
Planning tips for September
- It's typhoon season's peak. Most trips are unaffected, but book refundable rates where you can, keep one flex day, and re-check outdoor events' pages if a storm is tracking.
- Sumo sells on a schedule. Advance sales open ~5–8 weeks out and Tokyo weekends go first — set a reminder rather than hoping at the door (there are limited same-day seats).
- Still summer-hot early on. Early September remains 30 °C+; Owara's evening dances are the comfortable exception.
- Silver Week helps. The Sep 19–23 holiday cluster makes the Game-Show/Ultra/Danjiri weekend even busier — book that weekend's hotels first.
