Japan Events in August 2026: What's On, Where, and Whether It's Free

August 2026 is Japan's festival high season. The north opens with Aomori's Nebuta (Aug 2–7), Shikoku answers with Tokushima's Awa Odori (Aug 11–15), Tokyo hosts Comiket (Aug 14–16), the year's grandest fireworks burst over Nagaoka (Aug 2–3) and Lake Suwa (Aug 15) — and Obon week (roughly Aug 13–16) closes with Kyoto's Gozan Okuribi send-off bonfires on Aug 16. Most of it is free to stand and watch; the trade-off is heat, and Obon-week crowds on every train.

The honest short-list — which one is for you?
| Pick | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nebuta | The single most spectacular float festival in Japan — glowing 9-metre warriors. | Aomori hotels sell out months ahead; it's a dedicated Tohoku trip. |
| Awa Odori (Tokushima) | Japan's biggest dance festival, 100,000 dancers in the streets. | It sits inside Obon week — trains and lodging at annual peak prices. |
| Comiket | The world's largest fan convention; an unrepeatable subculture experience. | Ticketed entry, serious queues, and mid-August heat on Big Sight's concrete. |
| Koenji Awa Odori | Nebuta-level energy without leaving Tokyo — free, on the last weekend. | It's crowded; go early to hold a kerbside spot. |
For most first-timers: if you booked early, build the trip around Nebuta; if you're deciding late, Koenji Awa Odori (Aug 29–30) delivers a top-tier festival inside Tokyo, after the Obon crush has passed.
The Tohoku festival week
In the first week of August the north stages its great festivals almost back to back — Nebuta in Aomori (Aug 2–7), Akita's Kanto pole-lantern festival (Aug 3–6) and the Sendai Tanabata (Aug 6–8). One rail pass, three prefectures, three completely different spectacles; base yourself in Sendai or Morioka and day-trip.
Fireworks & Obon
August is hanabi's grandest month: Nagaoka (Aug 2–3), Lake Suwa (Aug 15) and the pure-artistry Omagari competition (Aug 29) — see the summer fireworks guide for how to actually get seats. Obon (≈Aug 13–16) is the year's biggest domestic travel week: ancestors are welcomed home, lanterns float at Arashiyama's Toro Nagashi, Nara lights 10,000 lanterns at Todaiji (Aug 15), and Kyoto's five Gozan Okuribi bonfires (Aug 16) send the spirits back.
Planning tips for August
- Book Obon week transport now. Aug 13–16 shinkansen and flights fill like New Year — reserve seats the moment your dates fix, or travel on the shoulder days.
- Respect the heat. 35 °C+ with humidity is normal. Festivals run at night for a reason — hydrate, and plan indoor afternoons (museum icons are open through Obon).
- Free ≠ good view. The big fireworks are free from public areas, but paid seats (bookable via each page above) are what put you in front of the show.
- Late August is the local secret. After Obon the crowds thin but the calendar doesn't: Koenji, Omagari, Asakusa Samba Carnival (Aug 29) and the Okinawa Zento Eisa (from Aug 28).
