Why fireworks are summer in Japan

A Japanese hanabi taikai is not a ten-minute add-on to a festival — it is the event. Tens of thousands of shells are choreographed to crescendos, whole riverbanks become picnic grounds, and the biggest competitions are treated like sport, with named pyrotechnicians vying for the Prime Minister's Award. The season runs roughly late July through August, with a few spectacular outliers in September and November.

In and around Tokyo

If you only catch one, make it a riverside classic. The Edogawa Fireworks Festival opens with 1,000 shells in five seconds and lights up both banks of the river jointly with Ichikawa City. On the very same night, the Itabashi Fireworks Festival unrolls a roughly 700-metre 'Grand Niagara' cascade over the Arakawa. For something rarer, the Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival fires 10,000 shells over the heart of the city, synced to a live concert — buy a stadium ticket to be sure of a view.

The legendary competitions

The connoisseur's choices are the great competitive meets, where the fireworks themselves are judged. The Tsuchiura All-Japan Fireworks Competition in Ibaraki each November is one of Japan's three great competitions, with 20,000 shells and the country's top makers chasing the top prize. And nothing matches the scale of the Katakai Festival Fireworks in rural Niigata, the birthplace of the giant shell, which launches the world's largest four-shaku (≈800kg) firework as a shrine offering.

A mountain-lake spectacle

For a different kind of awe, head inland to the Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival in Nagano on August 15, where around 40,000 shells erupt over the water and the surrounding mountains turn the booms into a physical, echoing force.

Practical tips

Arrive hours early for a good spot, bring a leakproof sheet and cash, and — most importantly — plan your journey home, because local stations gridlock the moment the finale ends. Many shows are 'rain or shine' for light rain but postpone for storms, so check the official site the day before.
