Background & story
UMEDA SKY BUILDING Christmas is the Umeda Sky Building's own Christmas event, held every year with a new theme. The older "German Christmas Market Osaka", held in the same ground-floor plaza, stopped after an official notice on 27 October 2022 said it would not be held from that year on. Today a Christmas market runs as part of UMEDA SKY BUILDING Christmas. The 2026 theme is "THE STARLIGHT TOWN", with a main visual drawn by the illustrator Emi Webber.
The Umeda Sky Building Christmas Market 2026 runs from Friday 13 November to Friday 25 December 2026 in Wonder Square, the open plaza on the ground floor (1F) of the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka. Stalls open 12:00–22:00 (last orders 21:30) and entry is free. The roughly 25 m symbol tree is lit 12:00–23:00 and runs a sound-and-light show every evening. On the 40th floor, the paid Kuchu Teien (Floating Garden) Observatory holds its own Christmas programme over the same dates, and the retro Takimi Koji food street in the basement (B1F) is decorated too. The event's official name is "UMEDA SKY BUILDING Christmas 2026", and this year's theme is "THE STARLIGHT TOWN", a story told by a black cat called Noël. Everything on this page was checked against the official event site and the operator's press releases on 13 October 2026 (checked 2026-10-13).

Tree show schedule
The tree's sound-and-light show changes through the season. The official event site lists three periods:
| Period | Programme | Show hours |
|---|---|---|
| 13 – 21 November | MUSIC SELECTION I (artist collaboration tracks) | 18:00–21:30 |
| 22 – 30 November | MUSIC SELECTION II (artist collaboration tracks) | 18:00–21:30 |
| 1 – 25 December | Main programme "THE STARLIGHT TOWN" | 17:00–21:30 |
For the December main programme (1–25 December), the official detail page says each show lasts about six minutes and starts on the hour and at half past, and the 21:30 show is the last one. For the November MUSIC SELECTION I and II, the official site gives only the 18:00–21:30 window, not the show interval or length. The tree is about 25 m tall, and around 130,000 LEDs run an LED-mapped light show (the official term is LED mapping). From 1 December the main programme tells an original story guided by Noël the cat.
So if you only have one evening in December, plan to be in Wonder Square a few minutes before a show starts, on the hour or the half hour, from 17:00. In November the show window opens at 18:00; the official site does not give the November show interval.
The market: Wonder Christmas Marche
The stalls around the tree are called the "Wonder Christmas Marche" and sell food, drinks and Christmas goods. The operator says the list of stalls and the limited menus will be published in late October. On 13 October 2026 the official detail page still showed "SHOP LIST COMING SOON", so check the official site for stall names, menus and prices once they appear. We will not guess them here.
- Limited original mug: ¥900 each. It is a 2026-only design in two colours: mint for the daytime town and grey for the night-time town.
- Limited capsule toy: ¥500 per play (one special coin). It is a limited-quantity collection based on the mugs from 2024 to 2026. Coins are sold at the Market Service Center on site.
- Crowd control: Entry is free, but the official notes say entry is restricted when the plaza gets crowded, for safety. While restrictions are on, the plaza becomes one-way and you follow the staff's directions.
The official pages say nothing yet about rain or about which payment methods the stalls accept, so do not assume card or IC payment at every stall. Check the official site before you go.
The observatory and Takimi Koji at Christmas
- Kuchu Teien Xmas 2026, "STARLIT CHRISTMAS" (40F, paid): 13 November – 25 December. The observatory (40F), 173 m above ground, adds photo spots themed on stars and the moon. The observatory's normal hours are 9:30–22:30 (last entry 22:00). Admission is ¥2,000 for adults, ¥500 for ages 4 to elementary school, and free for under-4s (official fee page). Heart locks are sold only in advance online.
- Takimi Koji Xmas (B1F, free): 13 November – 25 December. The basement restaurant street, built to look like a Showa-era shopping lane, gets a nostalgic Christmas look.
- Christmas dinner (39F): 23 – 25 December, in two sittings (17:30–19:30 and 20:00–22:00). The Chinese restaurant Sangu and Sky Lounge Stardust serve set Christmas courses. Booking is for two or more people, through the links on the official event site.
Is the "German Christmas Market Osaka" still held?
No. On 27 October 2022 the Umeda Sky Building announced that the "German Christmas Market Osaka" (Deutscher Weihnachtsmarkt Osaka) would not be held from that year on. It said the decision was about managing the venue as the event had grown larger every year. The same notice said the Christmas illuminations at Shin-Umeda City and the observatory's Christmas event would continue. The Christmas market held at the Umeda Sky Building today is the Wonder Christmas Marche, part of the "UMEDA SKY BUILDING Christmas" event described on this page. The official site describes its 2026 theme as a fantasy Christmas world "reminiscent of a Nordic town" (checked 2026-10-13).
If you are looking for a German-style Christmas market in Osaka, a separate event with a different organiser and venue, "Christmas Market in Osaka Tenshiba 2026", runs from Friday 20 November to Friday 25 December 2026 at Tenshiba and Tenshiba i:na in Tennoji Park. Entry is free, and it is organised by the Christmas Market in Osaka executive committee (per its official site and the organiser's press release, checked 2026-10-13). Check the official site for hours and stalls.
How to get there
- By train: 7 minutes' walk from JR Osaka Station, and 9 minutes from Hankyu Osaka-umeda Station and Osaka Metro Umeda Station (official access page). The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau also puts it at about 10 minutes' walk from the Umeda stations.
- By car: The Umeda Sky Building car park (B2F, 460 spaces) charges ¥500 for the first hour and ¥250 for each 30 minutes after that (official). This is the car park the official site lists.
- Finding the market: The market and the tree are in Wonder Square, the central plaza on the ground floor (officially "Shin-Umeda City Wonder Square, Umeda Sky Building 1F plaza"). The observatory is on the 40th floor and Takimi Koji is in the basement.
A simple plan for one evening
- Arrive around 17:00 in December (or 18:00 in November), when the tree show window opens, and walk the market.
- In December, watch the tree show on the hour or half hour; each show lasts about six minutes. In November, the official site gives only the 18:00–21:30 window.
- If you want the night view, go up to the observatory before the last entry at 22:00. The market's last orders are at 21:30.
This plan only uses the hours the official pages publish. The pages give no crowd figures, so we do not say when it is busiest; the operator only says that entry may be restricted when the plaza is crowded.

In December the main programme runs on the hour and half past for about six minutes; the official site does not give the November show interval.
