Background & story

Tokyo Midtown's winter program in Akasaka, Minato-ku (lead developer Mitsui Fudosan). The 2026 concept is "Midwinter Night's Dream", and the event is a partner program of ARTE TOKYO, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's international arts festival. The ice rink reaches its 18th year in 2026.

Tokyo Midtown's "MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS 2026" runs from Thursday, November 26 to Friday, December 25, 2026, lit from 17:00 to 23:00 in the Midtown Garden (9-7-1 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo, in Roppongi). The illumination is free. The signature soap-bubble show runs only until Sunday, December 20 (once every 4 minutes). The gold "Path of Light" stays up until Tuesday, February 23, 2027, and the outdoor ice rink opens on Saturday, December 5 (checked 2026-10-14).

Tokyo Midtown Management announced the program on October 7, 2026. This year's concept is "Midwinter Night's Dream". New for 2026 is the "MIDWINTER LOUNGE", a paid champagne lounge with a raised deck overlooking the lights, and the ice rink becomes the "RALPH LAUREN MIDTOWN ICE RINK" in a collaboration with Ralph Lauren.

The dates and hours match in two places: the press-release PDF on Tokyo Midtown's official website and the release text distributed on October 7. The festival dates, the venue, free entry and "no reservation needed" also appear on the program page of ARTE TOKYO, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's arts festival, which lists MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS 2026 as a partner program.

The soap-bubble illumination: MIDWINTER LIGHTS

This is the main light show in the garden. Set to original music, a 4-minute show moves through three scenes: a snowy forest at night, Christmas Eve, and a clear winter sky with an aurora. Soap bubbles float through the show once every 4 minutes, and only until Sunday, December 20. The organiser says the bubble period has been extended compared with last year.

That means from Monday, December 21 to Friday, December 25 the lights are on but there are no bubbles. If the bubbles are what you came for, go by December 20.

New this year: MIDWINTER LOUNGE

A lounge with a deck about 1.5 m high opens beside the lawn. From the deck you look out over the main illumination, and there is both standing space and seating. The menu includes champagne, original cocktails, potato frites with a choice of three toppings, and parfaits.

  • Dates: November 26 – December 20
  • Hours: weekdays 16:00–22:00, Saturdays and Sundays 15:00–22:00 (last order 21:30)
  • Entry: paid — you can enter only if you buy food or a drink

Like the bubbles, the lounge closes after December 20.

THE DREAMING TREE and the Path of Light

The Christmas tree is a real fir tree about 8.5 m tall, themed "the dreaming tree" this year and lit with shifting colours from 17:00 to 23:00 until December 25.

The Path of Light is a walkway of about 340,000 gold bulbs leading in from the garden entrance. It stays up after Christmas, until February 23, 2027. Besides lighting up at 17:00 and switching off at 23:00, it runs a light sequence on the hour and at half past (garden area only). The organiser notes you can also see it from the restaurants facing the garden.

The ice rink: RALPH LAUREN MIDTOWN ICE RINK

An outdoor rink on real ice, now in its 18th year, measuring 20 m × 42 m (840 m²).

Indoor Christmas events

  • Christmas Marché: November 26 – December 25, 11:00–21:00, Galleria B1, with HARMONIER, Nordika nisse Official Shop Tokyo and Hale Marche. The 2026 announcement does not include an event called a "Christmas market"; this goods-focused marché is the closest thing.
  • MIDWINTER SANTA STORY: November 26 – December 25, 11:00–21:00. A stamp rally that starts at a giant picture book in front of the Tree Shower on Galleria 1F; layering the stamps completes a postcard.
  • CHRISTMAS ENSEMBLE: Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, at 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 (about 30 minutes each), in front of lucien pellat-finet on Galleria 2F, free. The announced performers include the Keio University Wagner Society Orchestra and the instrumental unit Rhy Zoo; who plays in which slot is posted on the official site.

Getting there

  • Toei Oedo Line, Roppongi Station: direct connection from Exit 8
  • Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, Roppongi Station: connected by an underground passage, but there are stairs along the way, so Tokyo Midtown recommends the Oedo Line for wheelchairs and strollers
  • Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, Nogizaka Station: about 3 minutes on foot from Exit 3
  • Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, Roppongi-itchome Station: about 10 minutes on foot from Exit 1

Tips before you go

  • Timing: the lights come on at 17:00. The bubble show repeats every 4 minutes, so a few minutes' wait is enough to catch one. The Path of Light sequence runs at :00 and :30.
  • December 20 is the cut-off: bubbles and the lounge end on the 20th; the tree and illumination end on the 25th; the Path of Light and the ice rink last until February 23. What you see depends on the day you go.
  • Not the Hibiya event: Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, run by the same company, has its own winter illumination — a different building and a different event. This page covers Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi (Akasaka 9-chome).
  • The announcement says nothing about rain. On a bad-weather day, check the official site before you go.
  • For more winter lights see our Autumn Leaves & Illuminations Guide; to stay out later nearby in Minato, see teamLab Borderless Azabudai Hills.
