Otaru Snow Light Path Festival 2027

The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival 2027 (小樽雪あかりの路) runs 6–13 February 2027, eight evenings, as announced by the Otaru Tourism Association on 9 June 2026 (checked 2026-09-18). It lights up Otaru's historic canal and the former Temiya railway line. The venue list and the nightly lighting hours are still to be announced. The main canal venue is a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, itself about 30–35 minutes by rapid train from Sapporo Station, and the whole festival is free to attend.

Why it matters. Otaru's take on a winter light festival isn't about big illuminated structures — it's hand-lit. Roughly 300 meters of the 1923 Otaru Canal are lined with small snow lanterns that volunteers and visitors light each evening, while hundreds of glass "uki-dama" candle buoys drift on the water between the historic stone warehouses and gaslamps. The event takes its name from Yuki Akari no Michi ("Snow Light Path"), a poetry collection by Otaru-born writer Sei Itō. It began in 1999, timed to a national winter sports meet held in the city: organizers wanted to shed Otaru's "dark, lonely" winter reputation, so they lit the canal with candles and turned a disused stretch of the Temiya railway into a snow tunnel and plaza. Nearly three decades later it draws around a quarter-million visitors a year and has become a fixture of Hokkaido's winter calendar alongside the Sapporo Snow Festival, which runs at almost the same time just down the rail line.

Where the lights are. The festival spreads across roughly 20 spots in town, but four venues carry most of the atmosphere:

• Otaru Canal — the signature scene: snow lanterns and floating candles along ~300m of canal-side promenade, framed by Meiji- and Taisho-era warehouses.
• Former Temiya Line — an abandoned rail bed turned into a ~500m lantern walk with snow sculptures and food stalls, roughly midway between the station and the canal.
• Otaru Art Base — a snow slide and small stage in front of the art museum plaza.
• Mt. Tenguyama — take the ropeway up to the 532m summit for the city's night view paired with the snow-light displays below.

Schedule and tickets. There's no admission fee anywhere in town. Lighting hours for 2027 have not been announced — the Otaru Tourism Association says details will follow once decided (checked 2026-09-18). The Tenguyama ropeway is the one paid add-on, and the bus up from Otaru Station also charges a fare; check the operators' official fares. Everything else, including the canal walk and the Temiya Line site, is free and open to wander at your own pace.

The dates are official. The Otaru Tourism Association published them on 9 June 2026: 6–13 February 2027 (checked 2026-09-18). The same notice says the rest — venues, lighting hours, the edition number — will follow once decided, so none of that is confirmed yet. For context, the last four editions ran 11–18 February 2023, 10–17 February 2024, 8–15 February 2025 and 7–14 February 2026 — each eight days from the Saturday on or immediately before 11 February (National Foundation Day).

Getting there and tips. Fly or train into Sapporo, then take a JR rapid "Airport" or "Otaru Liner" train to Otaru Station (30–35 minutes); the canal is a straight walk down the main street from there. Go right after sunset for the best light — the candles read far better in near-darkness than at dusk. February in Otaru is genuinely cold and can be icy underfoot, so grippy winter boots matter more than a heavier coat. Because the dates sit right alongside the Sapporo Snow Festival, many visitors do both in the same trip — Otaru makes an easy half-day add-on to a Sapporo base.
