Part of the wider Matsue Suigosai ('water castle-town festival'), the fireworks are timed to one of Japan's best-known sunset lakes -- Shinji-ko -- making this one of the few hanabi shows where the sunset itself is part of the show.
Matsue Suigosai's fireworks light up Lake Shinji on the nights of August 1-2, 2026, with 21,000 shells fired from four pontoons on the water. The centerpiece of the wider Suigosai ("water castle-town festival"), it's one of the largest lake fireworks shows in western Japan.
Shells go up nightly from 20:15 to 21:00, with 10,000 fired on the opening night alone; a drone show precedes the display from 20:00-20:15. Because Lake Shinji faces west and is famous across Japan for its sunsets, the display starts as the sky is still fading from orange to dark -- the sunset itself becomes part of the show.
Reserved seating opens in three lakeside areas -- Kohoku, Shirakata and Konan -- with tickets going on sale from June each year; free viewing spots are also available around the lake, though they fill up fast. All three viewing areas are within a 10-15 minute walk of JR Matsue Station.
