Background & story

Revived in 1985, the 350th anniversary of the death of Date Masamune, as a festival made by the people of Sendai; one of Sendai's three big festivals. It carries on the float parade of the Sendai Festival, the Sendai Toshogu shrine festival begun in 1655, and the Suzume Odori, said to have been improvised by stonemasons at the 1603 banquet celebrating the building of Sendai Castle (official site).

The Sendai Aoba Festival 2027 (the 43rd edition) runs on Saturday, May 15 (Yoi-matsuri, the eve festival) and Sunday, May 16, 2027 (Hon-matsuri, the main festival), on Jozenji-dori Avenue and elsewhere in downtown Sendai. Reserved grandstand seats on Jozenji-dori cost ¥1,000–¥5,000 per seat for the 43rd edition. Group (10+) and SS table reservations opened on October 1, 2026, first come, first served (SS seating has 20 tables in all), and individual ticket sales are scheduled to begin in March 2027 or later (official announcement, checked 2026-10-13).

The festival follows a fixed pattern: the main festival is held on the third Sunday of May and the eve festival on the Saturday before it — in 2027 that is May 16 and May 15. This page covers only the 2027 edition: dates, time slots, seats and how to get there. Where the organisers have not yet published 2027 times, we show the 2026 (42nd edition) times and label them as last year's.

Getting there

  • Jozenji-dori grandstands: right outside Kotodai-koen Station on the Sendai Subway Namboku Line, two stops from Sendai Station. Use exit "Koen 2" for north-side seats and exit "Minami 1" for south-side seats, then walk west.
  • On foot from JR Sendai Station: about 15 minutes from the West Exit.
  • From Tokyo: the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa takes as little as 1 hour 32 minutes to Sendai (official access page).
  • By car: there is no festival parking for seat holders, and central Sendai has road closures on the day, so use the subway or a paid car park downtown.

Good to know before you go

  • The festival is held rain or shine. Only the SS area has a roof, and you are asked not to use umbrellas, parasols or tripods in the stands because they block other people's view, so bring a raincoat (official flyer).
  • Smoking is banned across the whole festival area, including the stands.
  • In 2026 the organisers asked visitors to take rubbish home or use the eco-stations, citing bear sightings in central Sendai.
  • About 5,000 people dance the Sendai Suzume Odori each year; 141 troupes took part in 2026. The "Mori no Ichi" market sells food and goods from places linked to the Date clan.

Not yet announced for 2027 (as of 2026-10-13)

  • Programme times, the parade route and the layout of the main venue (Nishi Park was the main venue in 2026)
  • Road-closure sections and times
  • The opening date and sales channel for individual seats (official news: "March 2027 or later"; group flyer: general sales "planned to open April 6")
