Background & story
Began as the Nagaoka Reconstruction Festival of 1946, held to mourn the victims of the August 1, 1945 air raid on Nagaoka and to pray for the city's recovery. August 2 and 3 later became the fireworks nights, and the dates have stayed fixed since.
Nagaoka Fireworks 2027 (the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks) will be held on Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3, 2027, on the banks of the Shinano River in Nagaoka, Niigata. Show times have not been announced yet; in 2026 both nights ran from 19:20 to 21:25. The Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation says the show is "held every year on August 2 and 3", so the dates never move, whatever the day of the week. Every seat inside the venue is paid: there is no free seating, and you need a reserved-seat ticket to watch from inside.
When we checked the foundation's official site and the official Nagaoka Fireworks Ticket Center on 2026-10-14, nothing specific to 2027 had been posted yet: no seat types, prices, sales dates or traffic plans. The ticket center's latest notice was the one dated August 4, 2026 saying the 2026 festival had ended. The sales dates and prices below are the official figures for the previous edition (2026); we will replace them as soon as the 2027 details are announced.

When does the ticket lottery open? (reading the 2026 schedule)
The 2027 sales schedule has not been announced. For reference, every 2026 sale was a lottery, in this order (Ticket Center sales schedule; Niigata Prefecture Tourism Association):
| Stage | 2026 dates | How to apply |
|---|---|---|
| Nagaoka-resident priority sale (lottery) | April 10 (Fri) to April 28 (Tue); results by postcard by May 26 | Dedicated postcard only |
| General sale, first lottery | May 25 (Mon) 12:00 to June 8 (Mon) 17:00; results by email on June 17 | Online only |
| General sale, second lottery | Planned for June 18-22, but not held because the first lottery sold out | Online only |
| Official resale | From July 6 (Mon). Residents of Japan only | Online only |
- According to the foundation's press materials of March 26, 2026, all seats except about 10% (set aside for travel agencies and sponsors) went first to the Nagaoka-resident sale, and the general sale only offered what was left plus cancellations. If you do not live in Nagaoka, the general lottery in late May is your first chance.
- The foundation announced each year's outline and ticket policy on March 31 in 2025 and on March 26 in 2026 (foundation press releases). The 2027 announcement date is not set, so start checking the official site in early spring.
- Tickets carry the buyer's name, and transferring them for money without the organizer's consent is not allowed. If you cannot go, the sanctioned routes are the official resale and, for NFT tickets in 2026, the NFT resale (foundation FAQ; Ticket Center).
Applying from outside Japan (the 2026 example)
In 2026, people living outside Japan applied through a separate overseas lottery on Rakuten Ticket, open from May 25 at 12:00 to June 8 at 17:00 Japan time. That page was exclusively for applicants residing outside Japan, and the domestic official resale is open to residents of Japan only (Ticket Center "for International Visitors"; Rakuten Ticket). The overseas allocation also sold out in 2026, and no additional tickets were released.
2026 seat types and prices (for reference; 2027 not yet announced)
These are the 2026 general-sale prices (tax included) listed on the Nagaoka Fireworks Ticket Center's seat-types page.
| Venue | Seat type | Capacity | 2026 general-sale price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venue A (station side) | Masu box (wooden floor) | 6 people | ¥32,000 per box |
| Venue A | Bench-style masu box | 8 people | ¥48,000 per box |
| Venue A | Chair seat | 1 person | ¥5,000 per seat |
| Venue A | Phoenix area seat (open seating within an area) | 1 person | ¥4,000 per ticket |
| Venue B (interchange side) | Masu box | 6 people | ¥30,000 per box |
| Venue B | North area seat (open seating within an area) | 1 person | ¥2,000 per ticket |
Nagaoka residents paid lower priority-sale prices (for example, ¥1,000 for a Venue B north area seat). Preschool children can watch on a guardian's lap; if you want a seat for a preschooler, they need a ticket too.
Where to stay
The foundation does not arrange accommodation. For hotels in the city it refers visitors to the Nagaoka Convention and Visitors Association (+81-258-32-1187) and the Teradomari Tourism Association (+81-258-75-3363). The foundation's FAQ notes that hotels in Nagaoka are "almost fully booked two to three months before the fireworks", and that many visitors stay near a Shinkansen station and travel to JR Nagaoka Station on the day. Because the 2027 dates are already fixed, a practical approach is to hold a refundable room now, before the ticket lottery results come out, after checking the cancellation terms.
Getting there and choosing a side
- By train: about a 30-minute walk from JR Nagaoka Station. The foundation says that, with road closures and traffic, walking is the most reliable way both to and from the venue.
- By car: all official parking is reservation-only, and in 2026 only ticket holders could book a space. The roads around Nagaoka Interchange jam badly after the show, so the foundation recommends using other nearby interchanges.
- Venue A or Venue B: if you use Nagaoka Station or the Yukyuzan or Nanbu Industrial Park shuttle buses, choose Venue A (right bank); if you use the Echigo Hillside Park shuttle, choose Venue B (left bank). The bridges between the two banks close during the show. In 2026, Ote Bridge was closed to pedestrians from 18:30 to 22:15 and Chosei Bridge from 20:00 to 20:45 (foundation FAQ; foundation festival information of July 17, 2026).
- People without tickets may not enter the viewing areas, nor stand in walkways or empty spaces inside the venue.
What if it rains?
The show goes ahead in light rain. It is postponed or cancelled only if heavy rain swells the Shinano River enough to affect the launch tubes, or if typhoon-strength winds make launching unsafe (foundation FAQ; Rakuten Ticket).
What is Nagaoka Fireworks?
The festival grew out of the "Nagaoka Reconstruction Festival", held in 1946 to mourn the victims of the Nagaoka air raid of August 1, 1945 and to pray for the city's recovery; August 2 and 3 later became the fireworks nights (Niigata Prefecture Tourism Association). Its signature shells are the Sanshakudama, a three-shaku shell that opens about 650 m across, and the Phoenix, a wide display about 2 km across created to pray for recovery after the 2004 Chuetsu Earthquake. For 2026 the foundation announced 40 large-scale displays each night (festival information, July 17, 2026).
What is still unannounced for 2027 (as of 2026-10-14)
- Seat types, prices and the dates of the resident and general lotteries (in 2026 they opened on April 10 and May 25)
- Whether there will be an overseas sale, and when
- Parking reservations and road-closure times
- The fireworks program

Good to know
The dates are fixed every year (August 2 and 3). Seats are sold by lottery only: in 2026 the resident sale opened April 10 and the general lottery on May 25 at noon, and everything sold out on June 17; overseas residents applied through a separate Rakuten Ticket page. The foundation does not arrange hotels, so contact the Nagaoka Convention and Visitors Association or stay near a Shinkansen station. Pick Venue A or B to match your transport, because the bridges between the banks close during the show.
Frequently asked questions
- When is Nagaoka Fireworks 2027?
- Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3, 2027. The Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation holds the festival every year on August 2 and 3, so the dates are fixed. Show times for 2027 have not been announced; in 2026 both nights ran 19:20-21:25 (2025: 19:20-21:10) (checked 2026-10-14).
- When do Nagaoka Fireworks 2027 tickets go on sale?
- The 2027 schedule has not been announced (as of 2026-10-14). In 2026 every sale was a lottery: the Nagaoka-resident sale ran April 10-28, the general first lottery ran May 25 (12:00) to June 8 (17:00 Japan time), and seats sold out when results came out on June 17, so the second lottery never ran. Overseas residents applied through Rakuten Ticket's overseas page in the same May 25 - June 8 window.
- Can I watch Nagaoka Fireworks for free?
- Not inside the venue: every seat is paid, there is no free seating and no same-day ticket, and people without tickets may not enter the viewing areas or stand in walkways inside the venue. Children of elementary-school age and above need a ticket.
- When should I book a hotel for Nagaoka Fireworks 2027?
- The foundation does not arrange hotels and refers visitors to the Nagaoka Convention and Visitors Association (+81-258-32-1187). Its FAQ says Nagaoka hotels are almost fully booked two to three months before the show, and many visitors stay near a Shinkansen station instead. Since the 2027 dates are fixed, holding a refundable room early is the practical move.
- Is Nagaoka Fireworks cancelled if it rains?
- No, it goes ahead in light rain. It is postponed or cancelled only if heavy rain swells the Shinano River or typhoon-strength winds make launching unsafe (Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation).
