Things to Do in Kyoto This Weekend: July 4–6, 2026

Short answer: the weekend of July 4-6, 2026 is Kyoto's calm before the storm. Gion Matsuri technically started July 1 and runs all month, but its two big spectacles - the lantern-lit Yoiyama evenings and the float parades - don't start until the middle of July. So this particular weekend rewards smaller, verified picks instead: a language-exchange cafe on Saturday, a sake museum on Sunday, and a rainy-day-proof museum in nearby Uji any day you like. Updated early July 2026 - this page is refreshed weekly, so check back before you plan a different weekend.
We built these picks from what's actually confirmed on the calendar this week - not a generic "top 10 Kyoto things" list. If you're aggregating from connpass, jmty and official festival pages the way we do, early July is genuinely a quieter stretch between the Fushimi hydrangea season and Gion Matsuri's climax - which is exactly why it's worth knowing what's real and bookable right now.
This weekend at a glance (Sat-Mon, Jul 4-6)
- Sat Jul 4, 3:00-4:30pm - Kyoto Japan-Korea Conversation Cafe. A casual Korean-conversation meetup at hatoba cafe in Minami Ward - seating is arranged by level, so total beginners and fluent speakers both have a table. ¥1,000 (¥500 if no Korean-speaking guests turn up; the first two Korean participants attend free). A good pick if you want to actually meet people rather than just sightsee.
- Sun Jul 5, 9:30am-4:30pm (last entry 4:00pm) - Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. In the Fushimi brewing district, a five-minute walk from Chushojima Station, with exhibits on centuries of sake-making, a brewery tour and a tasting corner. One thing worth knowing before you go: the museum goes cashless from July 2026, so bring a card or IC/mobile payment rather than cash.
- Any day this weekend (closed Tuesdays) - Nintendo Museum, Uji. A short train ride from central Kyoto (5 min walk from Ogura Station), Nintendo's own museum walks through 130+ years of the company's history, from hanafuda playing cards to the Switch, in giant interactive exhibits. Admission is by lottery through a free Nintendo Account, so apply first - don't expect to just walk in.
Is Gion Matsuri happening this weekend?
Partly. The festival period runs the whole of July, so Yasaka Shrine and the neighbourhood shrine halls that host each float are already in preparation mode - but the parts everyone pictures (lantern-lit floats, crowded pedestrian streets, the parade itself) are not on this weekend. Here's the verified 2026 schedule:
- Saki Matsuri Yoiyama (evening float displays): July 14-16
- Saki Matsuri float parade (Yamaboko Junko): July 17, departs 9:00am - 23 floats led by the Naginata-hoko
- Ato Matsuri Yoiyama: July 21-23
- Ato Matsuri float parade: July 24, departs 9:30am - 11 floats led by the Hashibenkei-yama
If you're only in Kyoto for July 4-6, you'll miss the floats, but keep an eye out for early signs of the build-up - chimaki charms starting to go up at neighbourhood association halls, and Yasaka Shrine itself gearing up for the month ahead. For the full day-by-day schedule, access notes and the best spots to watch the float-turning (tsuji-mawashi) at Shijo-Kawaramachi, see our complete Gion Matsuri 2026 guide. If you want the story behind the festival, why Gion Matsuri exists traces it back to a 9th-century plague-warding ritual at Yasaka Shrine.
Planning ahead: if your trip dates are flexible, landing on July 14-17 or 21-24 is when Kyoto is at its most spectacular - and also its most booked-out, so reserve accommodation now if you can move your dates.
Looking past this weekend
- Fri Jul 10, 10:00pm - CLUB METRO. Kyoto's respected basement live house and club, running since 1990, resumes its regular all-genre night next Friday - a useful marker if you're already thinking about next weekend in the city.
- The Gion Matsuri 2026 guide is the place to track everything landing later in July, including the Toji Temple Kobo-ichi antiques market that runs on the 21st of every month.
Practical notes for this weekend
- Heat: early July in Kyoto is hot and humid. Carry water and slot indoor stops - the sake museum, the Nintendo Museum - into the middle of the day.
- Cash: Gekkeikan's museum is cashless from this month; if you're relying on cash anywhere else, it's worth checking ahead.
- Language: the conversation café is explicitly built for mixed-level speakers, and both museums have English signage and websites, so none of this weekend's picks require fluent Japanese.
- Trains: Fushimi (Chushojima Station, Keihan Main Line) and Uji (Ogura Station, Kintetsu Kyoto Line) are both easy day-trip legs from central Kyoto, roughly 20-30 minutes from Kyoto Station or Gion.
How we keep this page current
This "this weekend" guide is refreshed weekly as new events are confirmed and past ones drop off - the picks above are specific to July 4-6, 2026. Gion Matsuri coverage stays live and up to date all month on its own page, which we'll keep updating through the Yoiyama and float-parade dates as details are confirmed. Bookmark this page and check back next week for what's on for the following weekend in Kyoto.
