The big two events
If you can time it, Japan's anime calendar peaks twice. Comiket at Tokyo Big Sight is the world's largest fan convention — hundreds of thousands of fans, tens of thousands of self-published doujinshi booths, and jaw-dropping cosplay, held each August and December. In spring, AnimeJapan brings every major studio under one roof with trailers, voice-actor stages and exclusive goods.
Any-day immersion
No convention in town? Akihabara is otaku heaven 365 days a year: multi-floor anime megastores, retro and rhythm-game arcades, maid cafes and endless gachapon. It's free to wander and easy to lose an afternoon.
A surprising stop
Anime fans will also enjoy Kanda Myojin Shrine, a real Shinto shrine that doubles as a 'Love Live!' pilgrimage site and sells tech-and-anime-themed charms.
Tips
- Check exact 2026 dates for Comiket and AnimeJapan on official sites — they shift each year.
- Summer Comiket is extremely hot; bring water, cash and a fan.
- Akihabara's main street goes car-free on weekend afternoons.
For fans, Tokyo is the ultimate pilgrimage.
