Origen e historia
The festival dates to 1617 (Genna 3). Hosokawa Tadaoki began building Kokura Castle in 1602 and completed it around 1609, then introduced the festival in the style of Kyoto's Gion Matsuri to protect his new castle town from summer epidemics and bring peace and prosperity. It's tied to Yasaka Shrine on the Kokura Castle grounds, and its defining trait is a rare two-sided drumming technique, with performers hitting both faces of each drum simultaneously as the floats parade through the streets.
