Highlights

  • The Ogiyama Fire Festival — the controlled burning of a hillside on Mount Ogi at night
  • Free entry to dozens of the city's public hot-spring baths
  • A mikoshi (portable shrine) parade and the Fureai street dance

Background & story

Held each April 1–5 around 'Onsen Appreciation Day', the festival thanks the deities for Beppu's eight legendary hot-spring districts — the Beppu Hatto — which produce more thermal water than any other city in Japan.

Good to know

Bring a small towel and try several of the free baths in one afternoon — it is the only time of year so many open their doors at no charge.
